A.B.C.’s Take Thriller, 6-2
Sensational Play Marks Negro Loop Tilt Here
Big Jumbo MCAllister, fogging ‘em in there ala Dizzy Dean, today is the talk of the 1,000 customers who who watched the Indianapolis A.B.C.’s soar into the leadership of the Negro American baseball league last night at Lippincott park.
With blinding speed plus some sensational fielding, the capital city boys dumped the fames Atlanta, Ga. Black Crackers, 6-2, in a game that produced more thrills than any other two at Lippincott park in five years.
McAllister’s four-hit performance should have been a whitewash, but a two-base error and a passed ball in the fourth permitted the Crackers’ first tally and a triple mixed with a wild throw accounted for the other Atlanta run. Outside of these spots, the Georgia boys might just as well have stayed at home.
Ted Strong, the elongated first sacker of the Indianapolis club, and Second Baseman Riddle sparkled in the field. Four times Strong scooped up hard thrown balls out of the dirt to retire the side and his two hits in the A.B.C.’s 10-hit batting attack eventually produced a pair of runs.
A pass to Bradford and singles by Strong and Armour mixed up with an error and stolen base punched over two runs for the Indianapolis team in the first and they picked up another on McAllister’s fielder’s choice and Bradford’s triple in the fifth.
McAllister banged a 385 foot triple against the left center field fence in the seventh and scored on Lyle’s fly to right for the fourth run, while the two additional tallies in the ninth came on three hits, a sacrifice and an infield tap.
