SUNDAY SCHOOL
LESSON
Suffering Taught
Israelites to Turn
To the True God
The International Sunday School
Lesson for May 20
Scripture: I Kings 12:1-17; II
Kings 11-25, Jeremiah 18-39
• • •
W7E have seen how the down-
" fall of Israel began, following
the strong reigns of David and
Solomon, when dissension and
division arose. The Ten Tribes
which revolted against the oppressive rule of Rehoboam, Solomon's son, and set up the Northern Kingdom, under Jeroboam,
went down in ruin with their
kingdom in 722 B. C. when the
Assyrian conqueror destroyed
them. These were the so-called
"Lost Ten Tribes."
The Southern kingdom, of th^
two tribes which remained loyal
to the succession of Solomon
survived for 136 years, until 58C
B. C. Then the Babylonian conqueror came.
Babylon itself was shortly to
have a conqueror, who befriended the Jewish, eixiles, and
made possible the return of many
to build again their ravaged
country. With that return the
next lesson will deal; but if om
wishes' a vivid picture of what
the exile meant, he will find it in
the 137th Psalm.
Yet this period of the Exile has
produced the loftiest and most
beautiful of all the Hebrew
Scriptures. In their suffering?
the people learned to value the
things that they had lost, and
prophets arose among them to
turn their hearts and minda to
the worship of the true God.
The outstanding prophets of
the Southern Kingdom were
Zechariah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and
Ezel-iel, and minor prophets.
Micah, Nahum, Joel, Habakkuk,
Zephaniah, and_Obadiah prophesied during the latter part of the
Kingdom.
These prophecies, with theii
warnings against entangling al-
, liances, have been used by some
in recent years to urge an isolationist policy for the IJ. S. A.
' But the American of today
might well say with the ancient
patriot of Zion: "For Zion"s sake
will I not hold my peace, and
for Jerusalem's sake will I not
rest, until the righteousness
thereof go forth as brightness,
and the salvation thereof as a
lamp that burnetii." (Isaiah
62:1.) '
The Polish question seems to
be the most difficult problem of
the United Nations Conference.
Between the Moscow-constituted
Polish government and the
London Polish government-in-
exile, the delegates are poles
apart.
No one will deny that the
leaders of Nazi Germany made
their marks. But what we're
all worried about is: will they
• set a chance to spend them?

PLACK SHEER ON COTITCDZZ j
Lei's not judge- any group Ly j
its worst members.
If vre are prejudiced against j
labor, we are apt to think of seme j
pop-eyed Crc-cater as the symbol J
of labor.
And I know a few useless members of otherwise fine families of
business loaders who are often
held up as typical "idle rich industrialists." Their grandfathers
or fathers struggled to build an
honest business. Other members
of their families work hard to
carry it on. But these black sheep
go in for night life and general
high-jinks.
The best people among workers
or among business builders don't
get their names in the papers as
often as the darn fools on either
side of the fence.
GIVE- YOUR CAR A
BRAKE-CHECK!
I have mentioned a number of
times before the nation-wide
brake emphasis program inaugurated by the police of the nation on
April 15.. It is now under way
and practically all communities
are making astounding discoveries
concerning the condition of the
brakes on their motor cars.
The simple, speedy tests made
by the police is giving drivers an
indication of whether or not ihen
brakes are meeting requirements.
If their brakes do not begin to grij
before the pedal touches a 'small
block placed on the floor beneath
them, then motorists know thai
they should have their brakes
tightened.
To make yours a safer community in which to live, drive, and
walk, cooperate with your traffic
officers. Have your brakes checked
regularly, keep your car in A-l
eondition and drive carefully.
