Salvation, Supreme
Treasure of the
Kingdom of Heaven
Text:
St. Matthew's Gospel,
Chapters 12-14
TJ?7HEN the rich young man
came to Jesus, asking what \
he might do to inherit eternal
life, and when Jesus bade him
go and sell all his goods and
come and follow Him as one of
the immediate circle of disciples,
Jesus said, "And thou shalt haye
treasure in heaven."
What was this treasure in
heaven, worth more than all the
possessions of a rich man? Perhaps a study of the three chapters in Matthew, that tell of the
"treasures of the Kingdom." will
help us to see ar.". understand.
Jesus compared the Kingdom
to treasure hid in a field, which
a man solo all that he had to
buy.
Do we value the Kingdom of
God in that way? Is there realism in what Jesus said? He'
healed people of their diseases;
He brought health and sanity to
those "possessed of devils"; He
gave food to the hungry; He restored life; but all these things
He spoke of as secondary or unimportant in comparison with
the Kingdom itself.
The supreme treasure of the
Kingdom is salvation. The
greatest word that Jesus spake
was, "Son, thy sins be forgiven
thee"; and when His enemies
and critics accused Him of blasphemy, he replied by challenging
them with the question, "Whether is it easier to say to the sick
of the palsy, 'Thy sins be forgiven thee'; or to say, 'Arise,
take up thy bed and walk'?"
In our modern world we have
become very polite and squeamish in avoiding talk about sin
and salvation. Even in our pulpits nice and eloquent sermons
do not say much about such
things. Yet sin is the most terrible fact of our life—glaringly
apparent on the front page, and
in the inner columns, of all of
our newspapers.
So, salvation *s the first and
supreme treasure of the King-<
dom. What treasure we should
have, and will have, in the answer to our daily prayer, Thy
Kingdom come!
