MIRROR CONGRESS APES UNIONISM ' ; SOUTH BENP i 1 weekly] j FRIDAY, JULY 25th, 1941 j BELIEVE It Or ELSE! B& Silas cWitherspQon MEAT O' THE COCONUT THANKS! OUR SENIOR SENATOR THINKS OUR PRESIDENT AT LEAST "SINCERE" BUT KNOX ISTOO"COCKEY"AND EDGING US WARWARD Thanks to Senator Fred- Van Nuys for his gallant contribution to the America First for the Axis cause, while in South Bend rethe appointment of a successor. He found out that there was no chance. Then, according to the "one and only," he turned attention to the war situation and left the "good word" that a "perfectly sincere president" is being led astray, by what he didn't term, but what is generally termed "war mongers." Very well, if correctly quoted, he is welcome to proper classification along with B. "Kraut" Wheeler, G. "Parrot" Nye, and other such ilk; "Lippy" Lindbergh included. Some while ago the senator was reported incensed at post cards from here, some thought spurious, urging him to vote against the lend-lease bill. Some investigation was made locally and the spuriousness exposed. How he would have voted, had, he voted, I do not know, but judged by his recent interview, as quoted, it is difficult to digest his indignation over the post cards received. How many shoulders can he carry water on anyway? He did a good job getting himself reelected by the process. Evidently he is not for the president's foreign policies. Does he think such mollycoddling of the Nazist sympathizers, appeasers, non-interventionists, or what not, will aid him sufficiently next time, to reelect him, if he chooses to run again? The senator takes a crack at Secretary of the Navy Knox. He thinks Knox is too cockey; "bellicose"—is edging us into war; probably, in his estimate, one of those who is leading "our perfectly sincere president" astray. In other words, the president is senseless; is only "sincere." That is nice of the senator, but the effect in these parts, among good Democrats, and anti-Nazi Republicans, is going to be to wonder if the senator is either? The senator cannot come to South WOULD DEBATE EVERY DEFENSE MOVE FOR NAZI BENEFIT Plenty of Precedent for Visit to Iceland WHILE we're weeping and wailing about sabotage in the mills, strikes in defense industries, blockading preparedness, and yapping about Communism, etc., how about Congress, and the Christian Fronts and America Firsts, for the Axis ? And in the present instance particularly Congress; isolationist side of both houses. Elsewhere establishment of an American military base on Iceland is generally applauded as an obviously intelligent element in our defense preparations. Of course, the isolationists are clamoring that the president should have gone to congress and gained congressional cooperation in the project before closing the deal, and there has been much oratory concerning infraction of the constitutional provision reserving to congress the power to declaref war, etc. Now just suppose the president has gone to congress with his proposal that Iceland should be garrisoned by yankee troops as part of our defense program, and particularly to forestall Hitler from seizing that vantage point? Senator Wheeler would have stressed his determination to oppose what he calls an approach to war; Senator Nye would have voiced his variation of the theme and Senator Taft would have contributed his version of the limitations on the president's powers as commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the United States. There would be debate running into weeks, in the course of which the full details of our plans and specifications of the proposed base construction would have been ventilated. What Herr Hitler would be doing in the interim is anybody's guess. It seems quite possible, had there been such a debate, that an American transport—if one were finally sent—would have had an excellent chance of bumping into a mine, or being sunk by a submarine. Senator Taft is also much exercised because an American engineering firm is building a naval base in Northern Ireland —■ Ulster. In this he sees the establishment of a yankee base. Actually, it is purely a British project, paid for by them. Doubtless, American skilled folks are on that job. Incidentally, what on earth would the United "States want a base in England for ?
