Defeatists Tell Us They Can't and Won't; That Nazi Socialism Has Us Skinned and Hides Nailed to Wall; That We're Outdistanced Beyond Catch-Up; Might Better Join Axis Cordiale—and Be Slaves Perchoice ARE WE NINNIES AND NUMSKULLS Let's Take a Look at the Record of Things Done in One Year for Starter—and What Is "Just Around the Corner." AMERICA IS ALL BUT 21% UNITED IT TTTrE'RE not so slow, not so soft, and / not so dumb, and Herr Hitler and ▼ ▼ his slaves, aren't so swift, so hard, or so bright, in comparison—" Lippy" Lindbergh, "Kraut" Wheeler, "Chump" Clark, "Parrot" Nye, and Robert A. ("A" as in "Adolf") Taft, and der fuehrer's other sth and 6th column harps notwithstanding. International politics aside, and intranational partisanship adjourned, all but a measley 21% (authority of the Gallup Polls), America is doing things in way of preparedness, building a defense machine, and supplying our outposts,—after a considerable manner that is attracting the Axis attention, stirring her to protest, mollification of her threats, and kindling a fire under her sth column agents. Confusion and sabotage are urged. Witness the California strikes. We have now completed a year of our defense production program. It is in order to ask, What have we do show for it? It has been claimed that no nation has ever done so much in so short a period in spite of many hitches, halts and slips. Here are some of the records: 1. Our army has grown from 261,000 to Servants Are Not Slaves In a Democracy BECAUSE Uncle Sam is a servant, it doesn't even under our democratic system of top-notch individualism, make him a, slave. Neither does it, because of his collective voice in behalf of America, render him speechless. He doesn't have to submit to all manner of abuse, of himself or country, whether imported, or inborn, and utter no rebuke. The present embodiment of that estimable gentleman, may never have flown the ocean, or earned a medal from the reich, but he has weathered three presidential campaigns, and landed with safe majorities, presently increased by the exigencies of the times. Boughten, battered, garrulous and gullible minorities have rights, but not majority rights. No one in America has a higher regard for our constitutional rights of freedom of speech, press, peti- Young America! Ahoy! A MILLION young men and women will be turned loose by the high schools, academies, colleges and universities of America, this month, with "go" signs pinned to their protruding chests. They're not much different than what we old codgers were when they dismissed us with a college "sheepskin" that was scarcely better than a high school diploma today. Education has advanced, and scholastics improved just about that much. The best part of our learning came, and so will their's, despite advancement, from our postgraduate course in the University of Rough and Tumble, We incline to look upon these "upstarts" as swell-headed; sometimes as moral degenerates, but unless we have caloused ourselves over, and cultivated forgetfulness to relieve us from ourselves, it is a rank hypocrisy for most of us to pretend anything like an ancient superiority. Immorality was not unknown among the collegians of the "flapper naughties," or the "gay nineties," or the "lusty eighties." The writer well remembers the "old gent," each vacation, spending most of his time giving "young America" a going-over. He belonged to the Ahe Lincoln class.
