The following is an edited version of the · Michiana Point of View by John Foegley, member of the St. Joe Valley Greens, published on April 22 in the Tribune.) I am a member of the Michiana Earth Day Steering Committee and was involved in the decision to have the Earth Day Celebration at Scottsdale Mall this year. I would like to share some of the very good reasons we had for moving the celebration to the Mall. Rain, wind and the occasional snow squall are not unusual and tend to make early spring outdoor events unpleasant - the weather on April 22 in past years has been abysmal. If we lived in a perfect world or even if we had access to an indoor/outdoor site, Michiana Earth Day organizers would hold events outside every year. And I have no doubt that some future events will be held in local parks. However, this year we were presented with a unique opportunity. Michiana Earth Day has limited financial resources and we were pleased to hear that Scottsdale Mall wanted to provide us with space, some promotion, and a dry, warm space to hold our 1994 events. In addition, organizers felt it would provide Earth Day with an opportunity to reach people who would probably never come to one of our events in a local park. Perhaps this year we will reach more senior · citizens, disabled people and teenagers because the mall is more accessible or a more frequented location. In the original Tribune article, the author bemoaned the isolation produced by our society. Earth Day tries to overcome that isolation by providing everyone an opportunity to come together in a celebration of the earth. We share ideas, opinions, music, poetry and even spend time educating ourselves. l have been involved with Earth Day for four years and I have yet to talk to anyone who thought It was a waste of time. It takes hundreds of hours and many volunteers to organize Earth Day every year. It takes planning to pull together the bands and performance groups and environmental education programs. We pull it all off on a shoestring budget because everyone does their part. Some do more, some less, but all are equally important to our overall success. Those who attend and work on our local Earth Day celebration are rich and poor, young and old, male and female. We draw strength from a diversity that crosses all social and economic barriers. Those who put on Earth Day and those who attend change what they can within the limitations (continued on page 2)
