CXJ\l'vENT ICJ\I - u:x:Pt .. £Rl....P m<ES FPLL PLANS By Peter Smith The convention, held in Philadelphia June 16-18, saw Pledge organizers from across the U.S. 1NOrk out a national program for the next year, discuss and debate sone of the critical issues in the Pledge as it begins its sixth year, and get to know each other better. Sane topics discussed were: identifying and evaluating trends over the past year, particularly the rise in creative actions and coalitional llllOrk; nonviolence and the Pledge ' s stance to.-Jards violent revolutionary movements in Central ~rica, especially the Fl"LN; ho-.i to organize against media distortion; formation of caucuses within the Pledge, including a women's caucus and a caucus on racism--racism as an integral part of the policy we are struggling against and our own racism within the movement. The Pledge is calling nationally for a series of nonviolent actions and ongoing activities through the next year, which will build to.-Jard large, dramatic, and creative regional civil disobedience and legal protest actions focused on Central ~rica in June, 1991Zl. These actions will culminate a yearlong campaign of visibility and protest including the following elements: Demaistraticns Leading to June Regional Acticn The following demonstrations are planned: October 7: The convention endorsed the "Housing ~" march in Washington, D.C. and cal led for a Pledge contingent to join the march from the Pentagon to the Capitol, making the connection between the war on the poor abroad and here at home. The local Pledge group is organizing buses from the South Bend area to this march including contingents from as many organizations as possible. For further information contact Peter Smith (289-2126).
