Only one feature article will be published each month. Articles about past events should give a general overview of the event and be shorter than 400 words. Frank Connolly spent the morning of April 1st judging over three hundred entries and chose one winner each from the elementary, junior high and senior high school level for the best project toward the establishment of peace with people and/or the environment. Kathleen Weigert, seated among the men and women from the medical, scientific and military establishment, presented the WILPF awards. Our $20 prize and certificate for the best project on the elementary level went to Abhishek Agarwal for his study on Silicon Wafers and Solar Energy; a $30 prize and a certificate went to Carrie Johnston, a junior high student, for her study on pollution levels in the St. Joseph's River basin; on the senior level our $50 prize and a plaque went to Molly Duman for her study on Invertebrate Assays for Identification of Possible Teratogens. (Teratogens can cause abnormality in the development of the human embryo.) Our small but determined presence was welcome by several people who came up to tell us: "We are glad you are here!" Although we can in no way compete with the number and value of the prizes awarded yearly by the military, it is important that WILPF, as well as other peace groups, participate in order to remind all present that science can/should serve other purposes besides military ones. A Look At Romania Our speaker at the regular WILPF meeting on May 23, 1989, will be Eva Borbly. She will report on the forced assimilation of Transylvania into Romania, the destruction of entire villages and the persecution of et;hnic Hungarians. We hope to end the meeting with a letter writing session.
