/ ,/ ~ The Newsletter of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom , t he Pledge of Resistance and the St. Joseph County Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign Volume 1, Number 12 "All the news that fits we print. " May 1987 EDITORS' INTRODUCTION We a r e c e lebrating our f irst birthday with this issue . Let's give ourselves a big round -of a pplause. We need to show special appreciation to Thos Langston, Rhonda Hughes and a small group of Monday evening editors who produced the first few issues, and to Jurgen Brauer who, practically single- handedly, produced the later issues. The enormity of their efforts is only now becoming clear to your new editorial staff as we struggle with this issue . So far Caroline Domingo has agreed to do copy editing; Dan Blacharski the layout; Peter Smith the ·word processing; Jeff Schwartz (WILPF) and Mara Hudson {FREEZE) the editorial board. We c~:mtinue to depend, of course, on the multitude of volunteers in the back room of Albert's for the final collate, staple, stamp-ede to g'et the issue to you. Since this is the start of our new publishing year, perhaps those of us who have been r eceiving the newsletter from the start should make another contribution. See bottom of page 9 for suggestions. PROPOSED PROCESS FOR PUBLISHING ATB by Caroline Domingo (WILPF) The following procedures should ensure that we continue to produce a top . quality newsletter without overburdening any one person. These suggestions were discussed at a r e c ent WILPF meeting and met with general agreement. If there is similar agreement at the next Pledge and FREEZE meetings we could start implementing them with the July newsletter. Persons in the three sponsoring groups should send articles to the editorial board. Currently, Jeff Schwartz is convening this board, which is composed of semi - perma nent r e presenta tives of each of the sponsori~g groups along with volunteers f or parti c ular issues . The board will meet on the e ve ning of the 17th of the month to skim <,lUickly through the ma teri a l and de c i de: what should definitely be put in this i s s ue ; what should be held over for the next issue; what should be discarded altoge t her ; Board members can also mark suggestions for cuts or alterations if they wish . The material for the current issue should then be delivered to Peter Smith, who will put it on disk and print a copy in column format for Caroline Domingo. She wil 1 proofread and copyedi t · it - - 'consuit ing the authors about changes if necessary -- and return it to Peter for enter ing the corrections. The corrected version in column format should be delivered to Dan for layout, to Caroline for a final proofread, and back to Peter for preparation of c~mera-re a dy copy. The final copy should be delivered to the Notre Dame Copy Center around the 25th of the month. They need 4 or 5 days to print the newsletter, so the group volunteering to collate, staple , stamp and address the copies cayi plan to meet around the 30th. It seems to me that much craziness can be avoided if each person involved is responsible for her/his stage only and no more than that. What do you think? It also seems to me that anyone who cannot manage her/his stage that month should definitely be responsible for making sure that s/he has a substitute lined up in advance and that the substitute knows exactly what is involved and has a list of all the relevant phone numbers . The need to involve the editorial board , the copy editor and the layout edi tor with the computer person interposed between each of these, plus printing time, requires an early deadline fo r articles (the 17th of the month) .
