Early South Bend Flight 2
Title
Early South Bend Flight 2
Description
This photo was taken ca. 1910 in South Bend , Indiana , by J . J . Makielski . It shows what may be the first flight over South Bend . Although Rene Simon is reported to have performed the first flight in the city on Sept . 10 , 1911 , these photos do not depict his Bleriot monoplane . This model is consistent with a Curtiss D pusher , a plane used by Eugene Burton Ely . The Hammond Times documents Ely as flying over East Chicago in October of 1910 as a result of a race from Chicago to New York . Race plans originally included a stop in South Bend , but the race was ultimately cancelled . At this time , the exact date and name of the pilot are unknown .
