Giants Score Late to Whip Clowns, 2 to 1
Ducky Davenport’s Chicago American Giants found Lippincott park a very pleasant pasture, indeed, again last night as they scored single runs in the sixth and eight innings for a 2-1 success over the Cincinnati Clowns in one of the slickest Negro American league games ever unraveled in the historic park to the delight of 1,500 spectators.
It was the second league success registered by the Giants in the arena this season. The last time it was the mighty Kansas City Monarchs who fell. And the Clowns were toppled in the same fashion last night – the Giants scoring late to reach the victory sheet.
Tough on Medina.
Before setting forth the details which fetched the Giants’ victory, it is in line to relate the misfortune which befell a highly skilled young Cuban hurler names Charley Medina, who out-pitched his lanky rival, Leroy Sutton, only to fall into the losing abyss with his associate Clowns. Medina, who yielded only two hits in the first five frames, and one of them an infield tap, set a winning example for his Clown buddies, but Sutton, who tightened after a shaky start and was frisked for the Clowns’ lone run in the second, stymied whatever plans Medina’s mates might have had of thrashing the Giants.
The formula Medina set forth contained 10 strikeouts, and not a walk, and yielded six hits. He doubled Buster Haywood home for the Clowns’ only run in the second. He singled with one out in the fourth but was left high and dry. Then, after the Giants had scored what proved the winning run in the eighth, Medina fanned the next two batters to retire the side as proof the rumpus failed to jar him to any great extent. Sutton was nicked for nine hits and fanned four and walked one.
Jimmy Smith, the Giants’ fleet right fielder, was the culprit who heaped the most woe upon the Clowns as he singled in the clutch twice to score Douglas, his single to left counting the tying run, and his single to left in the eighth produced the clincher. Previous to that Medina had fanned Smith twice.
Clowns Take Lead.
Haywood singled with one out in the Clowns second and went to second when Davenport let the ball skip away from him. Medina busted a double into left, scoring Haywood. In the Giants sixth, Douglas doubled to push it off, paused as Bissant skied to third, and came on home when Smith singled to left. Douglas singled with one out in the eighth, went to second on an infield out and rode home on Smith’s second successive ace to left for the winning run.
The game was replete with fine fielding plays, with Hoss Walker, Clowns’ manager, sparkling with five great assists.
