GIANTS COLLAR MONARCHS, 9-7
Chicagoans Cash in on Walks, Errors to Whip Foe.
Ducky Davenport’s hustling Chicago American Giants were short on hits, but sharp in employing six of their seven total effectively and thereby collared the mighty Kansas City Monarchs, 9 to 7, in a regularly scheduled Negro American league game before upwards of 3,000 fans in Lippincott park last night.
The season’s largest out-pouring of fans into Lippincott park saw the Monarchs drive Leroy Sutton, the Giants starting hurler off the hill in less than five innings and out-hit the Chicagoans, 10-7, but they lacked the hustle on the base paths of the Giants and fell accordingly.
The Giants harvested four runs in both the fourth and fifth frames, scoring in the fourth on two hits and four more in the fifth. Two walks and an error aided the Giants’ cause in the fourth, starting the downfall of Tommy Lamarque who outpitched two Chicago hurlers. Lamarque fanned eight, but walks in both of the Giants’ huge innings proved costly.
Sharp fielding, including two Monarchs double plays, was sprinkled throughout the game as the rival infields handled 27 assists, 15 by the Giants and 12 by the Monarchs.
Each team scored in the opening frame, the Monarchs taking two singles to turn the trick, while the Giants scored without a single, gaining the tie via an error by Sorrell at second. Johnson’s double and Wingo’s triple sent the Monarchs into a lead in the fourth for their lone advantage. It was quickly erased in the lower half of the inning as singles by Nelson and Minor, plus two walks and an error, gave the Giants four runs and a 5-2 lead. The Monarchs tied it up in the fifth only to have the Giants untie with four more in their half of the frame and were in front to stay.
