Kansas Monarchs Nip Chicago Giants, 9-7
Two big innings were enough for the Kansas City Monarchs Tuesday night at Lippincott park. Putting together four runs in the third and five more in the seventh, the Monarchs pulled out of town with a 9-7 Negro American league triumph in an exhibition game watched by 1,000 fans and promoted by Roy B. Root who manages the South Bend Indians.
Root announced that the Indians will play their next game Saturday night in Lippincott with the East Chicago Negro Giants as the opposition.
Chicago enjoyed one big inning but thereafter was stifled by the fast=balling of Melvin Duncan. The Giants scored their seven runs in a lengthy seventh inning stand when they pooled four hits, three walks and took advantage of one devastating error.
The victory enabled the Kansas nine to tighten their grip on second place in the Negro American league. The Chicagoans are in third place. Kansas City nailed down the championship of the first half schedule which ended July 3.
A streak of wildness cost Chicago’s starting pitcher, Harry Rhodes, the game. He walked three men in a row in the third after forcing Pitcher Duncan to ground out to the mound. Elson Howard singled home the first two runs and Tom Cooper lased out with another one-base hit, good for two more. Thus, four runs on two hits and three walks.
Rhodes was allowed to remain through a long six-hit five-run seventh. The Kansans opened with Herb Souell’s single, followed it with singles by Bonnie Serrell and Cooper’s double. Gene Collins doubled and Ernest Banks tripled.
Manager Ted Radcliffe, former catcher here with the Studebaker local N. 5 teams of 1948-49, inserted himself behind the plate and sent Frank Pearson to the mound. Pearson gave up a single in the eight and another in the ninth, but allowed no Monarchs to cross the plate.
Frank Dyll, the only white player to break into the Chicago lineup (there are three on the roster), opened the Giants’ seventh with a single to right. Rhodes grounded Clyde McNeal hit to the pitcher and Dyll was trapped off second but in the rundown the Monarchs’ hurler dropped the ball at third.
McNeal meanwhile went to second. Clinton McCord walked to fill the bases. Jesse Douglas also walked, forcing in Dyll. Art Pennington singled in two runs, Luther Branham walked. Pinch Batter Othello Strong singled in another, then Dyll lashed his second single of the inning, driving in three tallies.
