South Bend educators Alma Powell and Kevin Bradford talk about the challenges faced by African American students in the South Bend schools. Powell worked with Bradford’s father, Archie Bradford, in the early 1980s during a time when the South Bend schools implemented court-ordered desegregation. She was responsible for programming and monitoring the desegregation plan. Kevin Bradford graduated from South Bend schools in 1979, and is now a professor at the University of Notre Dame. They also discuss Charles Martin, director of Urban Youth Services at the YMCA. South Bend Stories were recorded at the Salvation Army Kroc Center studios as a joint project of WVPE and SB150, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the city of South Bend.
